As far as mechanics, 2K21 doesn't reinvent the wheel with its next-gen edition. However, the developers used this chance to add some more unique animations to the game. This includes some new animations for alley-oops, that can be extremely satisfying to pull off. Additionally, I felt like dribbling and ball movement were just easier overall when playing on Xbox Series X.

One of the more welcome changes in next-gen 2K21 is that the addition of the G League. Now, when coming from high school, players can decide to take the conventional path to the NBA and go to school, or enter the G League. While faculty will offer the players with greater exposure and fans, the G League will help them enhance their skills quicker, with greater progression on badges and skills.

2K21 also fixes one of the frustrating issues I brought up in my review, as gamers can now change the camera angle at high school, faculty, and also the G League. Despite some solid adjustments and improvements, MyCareer still feels unbelievably grindy. VC is hard to find unless you dump a part-time project's worth of hours to the match, or crack open your wallet. Players can now jump in the W, a mode that lets them create their own WNBA superstar. It's an wonderful piece of representation to a frequently ignored basketball league, though the mode is not nearly as fleshed out as 2K21's other center modes.

The City is a brand new version in NBA 2K21 on next-gen. Composed of a bunch of smaller parks and areas, The City is practically a huge version of The Neighborhood. You will find more courts, which can be nice, but the experts stop there. You still have to buy a ball for 25k VC simply to play with friends on a personal court, and the hosts are still really shoddy. NBA 2K21 on next-gen sees a great deal of developments into the basketball sim, but ironically only boosts the regions of the game that were already really good.

Looking at our overview of the first release of NBA 2K21, most of my drawbacks are still present. MyCareer's story remains shallow, the internet servers continue to be aggressively mediocre, and microtransactions are still intrusive. When you add the fact that 2K didn't offer you free updates for existing owners, forcing them to either buy the $100 version or purchase it independently for $70, it is hard to say NBA 2K21 on next-gen is your much-needed redemption for a continuously disappointing franchise.
